My name is Michael Langdon-Howe and I am planning to cycle alone from London to Truro starting on the 4 of October. This is about 280 miles.
I have two main aims. The first of which is to raise money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance via sponsorship. It is plain that in some areas and at busy traffic times, many routes through our narrow lanes rule out the use of a ground service. I often wonder what might have been the fate of some patients without the air service as I have often seen the helicopter fly over my house.
The second aim is to try to help raise awareness that cycling to stay fit, even for longer distances ,does not require expensive equipment, special training or youth OR LYCRA! I am 57 years old and reasonably fit, so I am using this opportunity to celebrate that fact. I currently just use my bike to get from the edge of town to work. I will be using just my cheap, lightweight road and trail bike and, of course my helmet.
My route will follow the Thames Valley, the Kennet and Avon Canal cycle route, the Fosse Way, The Levels of Somerset, the Taunton to Tiverton Canal, The Culme Valley and finally the A30 into Cornwall. Unfortunately there is no avoiding the hills into Cornwall but some parts of the old A30 still run parallel to the newer road and minimise exposure to traffic. Watch my progress on instamapper.com – username archangelmlh and password 12345678 via the gps tracker application on my iPhone.
You can donate directly to the trust through www.justgiving.com/londontruro, which is my personal “justgiving” webpage or email me on michael.langdon-howe@hotmail.co.uk or if you know me you can facebook me.
EVERY PENNY RAISED WILL GO DIRECT TO THE AIR AMBULANCE TRUST AS I AM MEETING ALL EXPENSES MYSELF.
