All Aboard! The Prostate Project £1 million ‘Love Train’ Walk for prostate cancer research

Trustee and prostate cancer patient Nigel Lewis-Baker, Alan Carr MBE and his daughter Charlotte embarked on our most ambitious challenge yet, to walk from John O'Groats to Land's End. They aimed to raise both vital funding for continued research whilst delivering essential awareness of prostate cancer right across the UK. Alan has many years fundraising experience and we were so pleased to welcome him to the Prostate Project team. Nigel has terminal prostate cancer and has also been recognised for his campaigning and fundraising efforts both in the UK and USA..

Starting at John O’Groats on March 21st, the Love Train route covered nearly 900 miles by walking 18 miles per day. There were official receptions given by mayors, sometimes with town criers, MPs, charities and new local supporters. People opened their homes for meals, beds and baths, hotels donated the same and even some campsites waived their fees. Nigel managed a number of media interviews and the BBC featured the walk together with shots of the research team on regional TV so helping to raise the profile and, hopefully, inspire other people with a cancer diagnosis to be positive and live life to the full. They arrived at Land's End exactly on time on 17th May, 2 days before the Olympic Torch was due.
