“I want to tell you about my day… I want to laugh with you about yours… but all the days start and end the same. They all begin and end without you” (Unknown)
In November 2017 my life was turned upside down…my lovely Nana passed away. Not only was she my Nana, she was my best friend.
From the beginning of 2017 it was clear that my Nana was unwell and deteriorating rapidly, although nobody really knew what the cause was. After a very bumpy few months of my Nana being unwell, many appointments later, a stay in a Care Home, admission to hospital, and appointments with consultants and neurologists, she was given her diagnosis. My lovely Nana was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). She was in the very advanced stages when her diagnosis was confirmed so it was crucial for us as a family to ensure she had the very best end of life care. My Nana died only twelve days after receiving her diagnosis.
My Nana spent her last five days at The Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester and what a truly incredible place it is. The moment we walked in through the doors, we were greeted with such warmth, kindness, calmness and generosity. The Nurses really are pure angels and I felt that they became part of our family during the time we were there. Not only did they make me cups of tea, tuck me up with blankets, spoke to me about what to expect, reassured me, they also hugged me and picked me up off the floor in my total distress.
Weldmar allowed us as a family to spent some very precious moments together with my Nana in her last few days, and for that we will be forever grateful.
Learning to live life without my best friend is proving to be a huge challenge and I miss her terribly every day, but one thing this experience has inspired me to do is fundraise and raise awareness for Weldmar. It is such an incredible charity and one I feel so honoured we were able to use. The words thank you will never be enough to all of the amazing staff.
Your donations mean so much to me but also to everyone at Weldmar. Every penny really does count and make such a huge difference to such an incredible charity so THANK YOU! x
