My story

 

I would like to thank everyone who has helped make Lynda's ride 2009 such a great success, the magnificent team of helpers who gave up so much of their time to come and support us either on the road or at the feed stops, everyone who has made a donation no matter how great or small either via the web site or in person, your support makes it all worthwhile and I am pleased to inform that this years total will be close on £7000, Thanks again.

And finally Thanks to the great bunch of riders who came along on the day, we almost managed to get all 28 riders who set off from Buckden in the morning to the Top of Holme Moss.

Next years ride is pencilled in for Sunday 8th August (Lynda's Birthday), make a date in your diaries.

‘Lynda’s Ride’ is a 175 mile one day Epic Bike ride taking in the highest road in each of the four Yorkshire counties (Fleet Moss North Yorks, Garrowby Hill East Yorks, Woodhead Pass South Yorks, Holme Moss West Yorks)

In October 2005, Just 7 months after the birth of her daughter Lucy, Lynda Sowerby was diagnosed with Terminal Cancer of the Kidney. Ironically Lynda worked for 15 years as a nurse on the Renal unit of St James Hospital inLeeds where she taught patients how to do their own dialysis at home. Lynda loved her work and had a great relationship with her patients.

Throughout the latter part of 2005 and early 2006 Lynda was subjected to various Doses of both Radio and Chemotherapy which in themselves were so intense that she spent a brief time at Kirkwood Hospice for respite recovery, the treatment did for a short time hold the Cancer at bay.

Despite the Intense Pain that She was suffering, Lynda spent the Summer of 2006 focused on the Children and was determined not to let the Cancer ruin her final months with them, When not with the Children she would spend hours writing messages and Birthday Cards to them that they would be able to read as they grew up.

In the Autumn of 2006 Lynda’s condition worsened and she was placed in the care of Kirkwood for the final time in November.

The Wonderful care Lynda received in her final weeks from the Nurses, Doctors and Volunteers at Kirkwood made the situation for Lynda and her immediate family so much more bearable, in early December when it became clear that Lynda would not make it to Christmas, the Staff took it upon themselves to bring Christmas forward so the Children could open their presents with their Mum, They brought in a Santa and his Elf, Decked out a side bay, and got various local Toy stores to donate presents, it was trully a day to remember.

At 2am on the 19th December 2006, Lynda peacefully passed away at Kirkwood leaving One year old Lucy and Five year old Luke.

As a thank you for the wonderful care given to Lynda, Lynda’s Husband Dave, who runs Sowerby Brothers Cycle Shop in Mirfield organized a bike ride 'Lynda's Ride' to raise funds for Kirkwood.

The riders invited to take part in 'Lynda's ride' have been chosen not just for their ability but equally for the type of People they are. Lynda was one of the most genuine caring people you could wish to meet, no ego and not pretencious in any way, these same characteristics can be said of the riders on 'Lynda's ride' and the Spirit the ride is run in is a fitting tribute to her memory, even though most of the Riders never actually met her.
