Navigating the perilous construction sites where they worked, Parvati would make a game with her sisters using bricks and loose tools from the workplace. At the age of nine she was introduced to Magic Bus and her life changed. Playing football with other children like her gave her the self belief to rebel against traditional social pressures. She recalls “My mother wanted me to stop studying when I was in 9th grade. But I stood up for myself and convinced her to let me go on. Since then I have started taking my own decisions.”
Today, at 19, Parvati works full time at Magic Bus as a Youth Mentor, helping other disadvantaged young women like herself.
This year she was offered a scholarship to attend the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy in the US. The experience was a dream come true for her - she now feels a million miles away from the little girl who played on a building site.
