Every year 750,000 children die from malaria in Africa. It can’t be prevented yet, but it can be effectively treated.
Tukae wants to run a 12 month project to concentrate on prompt treatment of malaria in children up to the age of about 13, the age when children finish primary school, in the area around Emau Hill.
The project will cost £5,000. This includes employing two qualified health workers, treatment costs and the cost of buying drugs and keeping them in stock. If successful, it may lead to further development of health care provision in the area.
It costs £2 to treat one child. Malaria is debilitating and hits children particularly hard - it can and does kill them.
All provision will be within the guidelines of the WHO and the Tanzanian government. The charge to parents will be about 25p so the programme will be heavily subsidised – if parents can’t pay, no child will be turned away without treatment.
Side benefits of this project include the qualified staff being there for all medical issues. The Health Post provides the only health care in this area so is very important.
