My story

Welcome to my fundraising page!

For the competition winner details please see below.

I am delighted to say, after a long rest, that at approximately 17:00 on Sunday 22 April I managed to complete this years’ Flora London Marathon and set a world record first for ‘Fastest Marathon on Crutches’ in seven hours fourteen minutes!!

The furthest distance I’d travelled in training over the last ten months was a couple of half marathons, so when I got to the thirteen mile mark on Sunday I really thought, with the incredible heat of the day and the whole experience becoming more like a dream every minute, that I might have to sit down and have a little nap! I began to think that I wouldn’t make it. I felt like giving up. I sat down on a curb stone on the way into Canary Wharf . A couple from a nearby house come over to see if they could help. I told them I’d stopped to cover a blister on my left hand, I had cramp trying to take hold of my right leg - the one doing all the work - and having passed three water stations without water, “could really do with a drink” – They rushed off to get water! And returned with a couple of polystyrene cups and a very tempting glass with iced water….. In my mind’s eye I saw the dehydrated lead actor collapse in the opening scene of the film ‘ Paris Texas ’ whilst drinking iced water! I opted for the former, poly cups.  I covered the blister and was helped to my feet. With my confidence and energy restored by the kindness of this couple, I continued my one-legged march towards the Wharf.

There was a place along the route where water had completely run out.  The occupants of a nearby tower block had gathered buckets of water to charge the empty bottles. All along the route there was terrific support.  I was wished well by many thousands and had friends and family out to surprise me all day popping up here and there. At the start, my Mum and Dad, cousin Jane and son Ivo (screaming so much that he might burst out of his clothes!) Athena and B in the East End , and again some time later.  Ashley Bingham and his clan not long after. My two guardian angels Harriet and Charlotte in my shadow for at least four miles offering me water and food each time I stopped.  All this combined to give me the support I needed to finish the job.

Special mention has to go to Marathon Support – Dan Sullivan – my hero of the day!  Without Dan I really couldn’t have done it. When I was thirsty he offered the gourd to my parched lips. When I felt like giving it all up, he barked orders at me like the trainer in the corner of the boxing ring at the big fight! Dan met me at eight and eighteen miles. Knowing that I had a chance to stock up with more isotonic drinks at these two points and change the all-important ferrules.  The eighteen mile stop gave me focus and with the roaring crowd behind me, by the time I reached eighteen miles I knew I could do it, I could make it to the end.

Since I began in July last year an estimated eighteen thousand people have been seriously injured or killed as a result of stepping on a land mine.

There are an estimated 500,000 landmine survivors who will struggle to lead a normal life in countries where people with disabilities often lead an extremely tough existence within their communities.

Your money WILL make a huge difference in peoples’ lives.

Don't forget, if you are a UK tax payer The No More Landmines Trust can reclaim an extra 28p in every pound at no extra cost to you, make sure you put a tick in the box.

My Charity ‘No More Land Mines’ are thrilled with the support from everybody who has visited this site. I can’t thank you enough. If you have been involved in any way, or know anyone that has, you are brilliant and so are they!

Thank you,

Angus.

No More Landmines - freeing communities from the legacy of war. No More Landmines helps and empowers communities around the world by removing the threat of landmines and unexploded weapons. We also provide support for survivors of landmine accidents to enable them to lead fulfilling lives. Unexploded weapons do not recognise ceasefires or peace treaties and they do not distinguish between a soldier and a child. They kill and maim innocent people long after wars have ended and impede communities struggling to recover from conflict – one third of these are children. Landmines and unexploded weapons affect millions more children and families whose access to food, education, water and healthcare is limited because they live amongst minefields or areas where unexploded weapons remain.
