Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
Maria Stott (49) and Trudi Evans (43) will be taking part in an Arctic Challenge February 21st – 28th February 2010, to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. This will be the second time that Trudi has done the Arctic Trek after successfully completing it in 2008, it was a very tough challenge which left her exhausted for some while. The challenge will take place in Swedish Lapland in a snow covered wilderness setting from tundra lowlands to the mountain area around the Kebnekaise andAbiskoNational Park. We will be sledding up to 50kms every day for 5 days, with responsibility for our own team of 4 huskies in temperatures as low as minus 45 degrees. There are 16 fundraisers in the party who we have yet to meet, by the end of the challenge we will know them very well. Facilities will be basic throughout, no electricity! Just oil lamps, candles, log fires and long drop loos (basically a small shed with a hole in the ground). We also have to chop the wood, fetch water and help with all chores and very importantly feed the dogs. We will be spending 1 night in a Lappic tent. This will be a major challenge for both of us it will be physically exhausting and very very cold. Unfortunately Maria has had to pullout of this challenge but together we raised £3500. The minimum total required now is £4000 not £8000. So therefore the minimum target has now been raised. Thanks to all who sponsored us, Further sponsorship still gratefully accepted.
Motor Neurone Disease Association Arctic Challenge is specifically raising funds for continued research to find a cure for MND, which effects people as young as 30. There is currently no cure, but for us it will also be money raised for the caring of the MND patients. Trudi’s mum Denise Baker died in August 2005 of Motor Neurone Disease, she was a ballet teacher inChandler’s Ford and Otterbourne and was just 64 when she died. Maria’s Uncle Tony Webb also died of MND in 1993. Tony was a well known business man in Marchwood trading under the name of A.D. Webb Plant Hire. He was just 53 when he died. Both Trudi and Maria are very much involved in the Southampton MND Branch as Trudi is now the branch Fundraiser/Committee member and Maria is Vice Chairperson
Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurons. Degeneration of motor neurons leads to muscle weakness and wasting of muscles causing increasing loss of mobility in limbs, difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. Further information can be found at www.mndassociation.org. Fundraising events that have already taken place are a Music Quiz at The Gleneagles in Butts Ash on 7 March which raised £165. A Table Top Sale on Sunday 29 March bought in £226, a balloon flight draw gave us another £286. The Music night at the Old Mill Pub, Holbury with the group the Pan Handles, raised a staggering £939. the 50’s and 60’s night with local band The Trojan’s raised £1300.
