My story

Hi, I am the Chief Executive of Services for Independent Living (SIL), and I have decided to ‘take the plunge’ and follow a lifelong dream.  In June 2012 myself and my husband will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, over a period of 6 days. I also intend to use this personal challenge to raise £5,000 so a disabled person can climb their personal 'mountain'.  ‘Kili’ is the tallest free standing mountain in the world and we will hopefully reach the dizzy heights of 5895m (19,340ft) at the top.

I have been with my charity, Services for Independent Living, since it first started in 1997 and have been lucky enough to work with some amazing and inspirational disabled people who have so much to offer their communities in spite of the challenges they face every day. If you follow the link to the SIL website www.s4il.co.uk/success.html you can read about some of these people.

I have paid for the trip myself so every penny of the money I raise will be used for a grant or grants to give a disabled person (or people) the opportunity to realise a personal dream or challenge (which they wouldn't otherwise be able to fulfil).  It may also change their life and, at the same time, give something back to their community and inspire other people to do something similar.  Disabled people will be invited to apply for the grant money and the most inspirational ideas will be selected.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs.

So please dig deep and donate now and spare a few pounds to enable somebody to do something incredible!

Follow my training, the climb and the stories of the people who win the grant funds on my JustGiving page. Thanks so much!

Last weekend walked Cats Back in Black mountains (Herefordshire) in cloud. Today walked Malvern to Ledbury (approx 10 miles) in lovely sunshine.

Most recent photos are of a crazy day trying to get up Cader Idris in terrible conditions. Wind literally blew me off my feet on the way down. I have a bruise the size of Ireland on my leg and a very blue, bruised finger. Have to look after myself now ready for Kili!

Upping the ante on the training now. Four mile run friday, 10 mile across Malvern Hills on Saturday and off road 7 mile run at Eastnor today. my legs are begging for mercy!

Thanks to Harriet for the fabulous big picture she made for the office of me climbing Kilimanjaro.
