Dear Friends, Supporters,
Thank you very much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Please support my fundraing excercise.
What is this about?
I am very excited to to go to the geographical North Pole! 90 degrees North - the top of the world! We are going with 1 English friend and 7 Dutch men including our team leader, a well known, very experienced Dutch Polar explorer, named Marc Cornelissen. We depart the UK on the 30th March 2010 and return 14 days later.
The Last Degree - is a very exciting and somewhat daunting venture. We will ski pulling our own sleds, or pulks (weighing 30-40kg) from the 89th degree latitide to the 90th Degree, the geographical North Pole. The trip itself will probably take about 7 days, skiing 8 hours a day aiming to cover approximately 20 km a day. We will sleep in tents (see picture above). Temperatures will be between -15C and -40C without the wind-chill factor.........
This expedition is also special as only a handful of North Pole expeditions also do research. We will spend up to 2 hours every day measuring ice and snow thickness etc. The data will be used by many climate researchers including the European Space Agency to calibrate their new CryoSat 2 satellite, the University of Alberta and other research institutes. We will set up a webpage where you can track our progress.
Please support me in this great adventure by giving to a charity for which I am a trustee, the Uganda Charity Trust Fund.
Started 9 years ago, the purpose of UCTF is to give under-priviliged children (mostly orphans) an education and the opportunity to develop their sporting talents, in order to foster self esteem and self confidence so that they can improve the quality of their lives. The charity is unique as at least 92% of funds raised goes directly to schooling. In 2009 we sponsored 168 children compared to 4 children in 2000.
Last year I visited Uganda and I have seen first hand the great work that the charity does and the amazing results that are being achieved! There are now 5 children from the charity who made it to the under 19's national cricket team!
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity. It really works.
Please also look at my friend Rupert-von-Eisenhart-Goodwin's page - he is joining me on this adventure! Rupert supports two other amazing charities (Down's South and HemiHelp) - have a look here: http://www.justgiving.com/Rupert-von-Eisenhart-Goodwin0
