Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

This year Sean and Gail have persuaded the other half of the family to take part in the Junior and Great North Runs on the 19th and 20th of September.

On Saturday the 19th, Sean who will be wearing his Bobath T-Shirt and Ryan  who will be dressed as a Dalek,(with some help from his Auntie Stevie who will be Doctor Who!) will run and roll the approx 3 mile course of the Junior North Run.

And on Sunday the 20th of September, Andy will be trying to win, and Gail, (who is going round the course with Jay and we will be dressed as Nuns on the Run!) will be trying to finish, the worlds biggest half Marathon.

This family effort is to raise money for a place that means a lot to our family, The Bobath Centre in London.

The Bobath approach to the management of children with cerebral palsy was pioneered and developed by Dr Karel and Mrs Berta Bobath. Begun in the 1940's the Bobath Concept is now well known and accepted in many countries as one of the leading approaches.

The main aim of treatment is to encourage and increase the child's ability to move and function in as normal a way as possible. More normal movements cannot be obtained if the child stays in a few positions and moves in a limited or disordered way. The aim of management is to help the child to change his abnormal postures and movements so that he or she is able to comfortably adapt to the environment and develop a better quality of functional skills.

Ryan attended the centre for a two week block of treatment in September 2005. During this two weeks, Ryan learned to, sit unaided, feed himself with a spoon, ride a bike and many other things.

On August 3rd, Ryan returned to the centre for another two week block of treatment.

During his treatment, he learned to, feed himself foods like yoghurt without spilling any down himself, he learned to sit on a bench with no support and without holding on, and he can now take his own t-shirt on and off with minimal support and finally, and quite amazingly, Ryan can now get himself out of his wheelchair and stand up against it, with no help at all. This is a very important skill as it will assist Ryan in many ways with his own care, going to the toilet for example. He wont want his Mum helping him for much longer!!
