We are a 24 hour search & rescue service to save lives at sea

Story

In October 2014 and during a visit to my son and his wife in Plymouth, my wife and I were once again walking our beloved 2-year old Golden Retriever dog 'Indie', along the coastal path at Wembury in Devon. We were shocked when he unexpectedly fell from a high overhanging cliff onto the rocks far below.

Frustratingly, because of the overhang and sheer rock face, I couldn’t get down to him or even see him. I contacted the coastguard and explained what had happened, but told them that I understood that there was probably little that they could do and to make matters worse, the daylight was already fading. Although highly unlikely to have survived such a fall, my wife and I just couldn’t bear the thought of him lying injured and alone.  The response from both the Coast Guard and the RNLI was incredible. In darkness, 2 of the 3-man RNLI team that had rushed from Plymouth, left their rigid inflatable boat and dropped into the cold sea and swam to the base of the rocks, whereupon they recovered Indie’s body. Mercifully, it appears that he had died instantly. We were absolutely devastated. Returning him to us later that evening was an extremely emotional moment, but they were the epitome of professionalism, commitment, compassion, empathy and modesty. Imagine what these VOLUNTEERS regularly do and would do for us as human beings, should we ever have the misfortune to need these dedicated people.

The entire 630 miles of the South West Coast Path is the longest walk in the UK. It is described as probably the UK's ultimate challenge for the long distance hiker, with repeated 'ups' and 'downs' and the total height climbed has been calculated to be 114,931 ft (35,031 m), almost four times the height of Mount Everest.

I have not 'backpacked' in 38 years, but am still a reasonably fit 57-year old - albeit with some troublesome 'old' injuries. Therefore, I have decided to do half of the walk in April, i.e. 315 miles in one trip, which should take me approximately 3-4-weeks. I will set off from South Haven Point on Friday 10th. April 2015. It will be a solitary hike and I will be self-sufficient and carry my own tent and provisions, camping each night. The donations from this hike will be to repay in some small way, the sacrifices that the volunteers of the RNLI past and present, have made and continue to make, assisting those who need help around the coast of the UK and Ireland. The RNLI rescues 23 people per day!

83p/83c in every pound/euro donated goes to the rescue service
17p/17c in every pound/euro donated is reinvested to generate more funds.
The personal protective equipment for just one crew member costs over £900.

Any donation whatsoever will be received with a heartfelt thanks on behalf of the RNLI.

Kindest regards,
Mel
