Flora London Marathon 2009 · 26 April 2009 ·

Afghanaid is a British humanitarian and development organisation. For forty years, our dedicated personnel have worked with millions of families in some of the poorest regions in Afghanistan to provide basic services and help communities adapt to climate change and natural disasters.

Story

Thanks for visiting my London Marathon Sponsorship page. I'm running 26.2 agonising miles on 26 April to raise money for a fantastic charity called Afghanaid.

Afghanaid has been working in Afghanistan for over 25 years and has been helping people rebuild their lives through three decades of devastating conflict. Grinding poverty, warlord violence and repressive Taliban strictures denied the most basic education to vast swathes of the population - especially women and girls, and one in five children die before the age of 5. Afghanaid currently work directly with over 500,000 adults and children focusing on long term sustainable development in rural areas, and making an immediate difference to their lives.

I'm particularly pleased to be supporting Afghanaid because of the work they do with Afghan women - those who suffered worst under the Taliban regime.  Afghanaid provide almost 13,000 women with basic lessons in literacy, maths and health education every year as well as vocational training such as carpet weaving, embroidery and tailoring. Six hundred self-help group members have received business skills training and more than 5,000 women have received loans to set up small homebased businesses.

If I raise my total of 2000 pounds, you will have helped support the training of 200 hundred health workers, or helped set up 20 small businesses. Please sponsor me to make that a reality - and to help me get through the hours of cold hard running ahead! Every little bit will help my tired feet enourmously!

I've brought technology to my training and started a blog so you can see how I'm getting on: http://marathonmumbles.wordpress.com.  I hope that I can get out some of the marathon bore here, and save exposing friends to too much of it. Maybe.

Many thanks!
