Within the past three years, I have had the pleasure of intimately working as a volunteer psychologist with the children, adolescents, volunteers and staff members of the Casa do Caminho. In August 2008, I returned to the casa after completing my doctoral internship in Clinical Psychology. When I arrived at the Casa (for the third time), and began implementing therapy with the children an adolescents, I became acutely aware of the need to address change from a systemic level. After many late night conversations, the project has been born and will continue to grow with your help.
The children at Casa do Caminho are orphans or come from destructed families. When the children arrive at the Casa, they are often traumatized by both experiences they have witnessed within their families of origin (e.g., poverty, violence, sexual abuse, poor parenting practices) and by the transition to the orphanage. Although the orphanage has previously implemented a system of structural behavioural support (e.g., rules, consequences, positive reinforcement), the children have not previously had an outlet to be able to cope with the intergenerational trauma that they have incurred within their families of origin. At the Casa do Caminho, a new system of family and individual therapy will be implemented which will improve communication, hold children to higher standards of behaviour, and address change on a multi-systemic level.
At the present time educators working with the children are often frustrated, as many of the children visit their families of origin during the weekends, and return to the orphanage displaying defiant behaviours (e.g., non-compliance, aggression, negative interactions). The children’s non-compliant behaviour appears to have direct detrimental effects on the overall dynamics of the Casa do Caminho, ultimately leading to psychological mal adjustment of the child, and impaired family management. The orphanage does not presently have a system to work within the ecology of family unit, therefore the children return to an unhealthy environment which has not changed. Although the children have gained skills within the Casa do Caminho, they do not have the tools to navigate life outside of the orphanage. Without family involvement and training success is infinitely limited
The individual and family therapy model is being proposed as a two year project which will continue to provide individual therapy to the children and adolescents on a weekly basis. Additionally, the family training program will form a structural base to open communication between the Casa do Caminho and the children’s systems of origin. The proposed system at the Casa will allow work on a systemic level to induce change, thus allowing the children to feel empowered, enhance their self-concept, and guide them in choosing appropriate behaviours, ultimately assisting the children in building a structure which will assist them with a healthy transition into society.

Em Agosto de 2008 regressei a esta casa após completar o meu estágio de doutoramento em psicologia clinica. Quando cheguei à Casa pela 3ª vez e começei a implementar terapia com as crianças e adolescentes, eu apercebi-me com clareza a necessidade de introduzir mudanças ao nivel sistemático. Depois de longas conversas pela noite a dentro, o projecto nasceu e irá continuar crescendo com a vossa ajuda. As crianças na Casa do Caminho são orfãos ou vêm de familias destruturadas. Quando as criancas chegam à Casa do Caminho, elas estão, na maior parte dos casos, traumatizadas pelas experiências que presenciaram nas suas familias de origem (Ex. pobreza, violência , abuso sexual , más práticas familiares, assim como, pela transição para o orfanato Apesar de o orfanato ter previamente introduzido um sistema estrutural de suporte ao comportamento (Ex. regras, consequências, reforço positivo) as crianças não tinham uma forma de escape!! que lhes possibilitasse enfrentar o trauma de gerações! que elas herdaram das suas familias de origem. Na Casa do Caminho, um novo sistema de família e terapia individual irá ser introduzido o que irá melhorar a comunicação, manter as crianças num nivel elevado de comportamento, e adoptar mudanças a um nivel multi-sistemático.
Presentemente, os educadores que trabalham com as crianças encontram-se muitas vezes frustrados, porque muitas crianças visitam as suas familias de origem durante o fim de semana e ao voltarem para o orfanato mostram comportamentos rebeldes ou provocadores! ( Ex: disconcordância, violência e interacção (relacionamento negativo). O comportamento disconcordante parece provocar efeitos negativos na dinâmica geral da Casa do Caminho, levando a um mau ajuste psicológico da criança, assim como, uma gestão familiar deficiente. O orfanato não contém neste momento um sistema que permita trabalhar a ecologia da unidade familiar. Assim sendo as crianças retornam a um ambiente que não está modificado e não é saudavél. Apesar de as crianças já terem adquirido capacidades dentro da Casa do Caminho, elas não têm as ferramentas necessárias para navegar na vida fora do orfanato. Sem o envolvimento e treinamento da familia o sucesso está infinitamente limitado.
O modelo terapêutico individual e familiar está sendo proposto como um projeto de 2 anos que irá continuar a oferecer terapia individual para crianças e adolescentes numa rotina semanal. Adicionalmente, o programa de treinamento da família irá formar uma base estrutural para abrir a comunicação entre a Casa do Caminho e o sistema de origem das crianças. O sistema proposto para a Casa irá permitir trabalhar a um nivel sistemático e desse modo conduzir a mudanças que permitam ás crianças se sentirem capacitadas, melhorar o seu conceito pessoal e guiá-las na escolha de um comportamento apropriado. Finalmente o sistema irá ajudar as crianças na construção de uma estrutura que as suporte numa transição saudavél de o orfanato para a sociedade.
