Case study: donations in action
Ben was born on 16th March 2002, a very healthy little born who up to his 1st birthday progressed very well and he was walking at 9 months. Tragedy was to strike and the results were to change this little boy’s life and that of his parents forever. Ben was visiting a neighbour with his mum ‘Toni’- when Ben lifted an un-fastened grill on a wall-mounted electric fire, his left hand went against the metal front of the fire, this made a circuit and he was instantly electrocuted and died. It was 35 minutes before they got Ben into A&E where 14 worked on Ben for a further 15 minutes. Doctors said “It’s been a full 50 minutes now, there will be brain damage; Toni pleaded, and on 50 minutes they managed to re-start Ben’s heart. The ‘motor neuron’ side of his brain, was affected. He has gone through extensive operations the last few years in an attempt to correct problems with his legs and muscles, and still has more to come.
