About Methodist Homes for the Aged

Methodist Homes for the Aged (also known as MHA Care Group) provides housing, care and support services for older people in need.

The organisation seeks to provide the highest possible standards of care and housing to older people. Services are open to all older people in need, whatever their beliefs, and MHA pays particular attention to peoples’ spiritual needs. This is done within a compassionate, Christian culture.

Services include:

  • Residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, using an approach based on continuing research and high standards of care for vulnerable older people
  • Rented sheltered housing, helping older people to live independently in their own flat, with the reassurance of access to a variety of support services and emergency help if needed
  • Retirement flats for sale
  • ‘Live at Home’ community services, encouraging volunteers to befriend older people still living in their own homes, who may have become isolated and lonely
  • New community dementia services for people with the condition who live in their own homes
  • Organising events concerning the spirituality of ageing, for older people and their carers.

Our history

60 years ago a group of Methodists, led by the Reverend Walter Hall, set up Methodist Homes (MHA) to care for older people whose welfare might otherwise be neglected. Now MHA supports over 6,000 people nationwide, and specialises in expert dementia care.

Major milestones include:

  • 1945 - MHA opens its first care home in Wallington, Surrey
  • 1977 - Methodist Homes Housing Association begins, offering sheltered housing
  • 1988 - MHA’s Live at Home initiative begins, helping older people in their own homes
  • 2003 – MHA celebrates its Diamond Jubilee by opening its 50th care home
