My story

Thanks for visiting this page. FOAG has been working in Masindi, Uganda for several years and has agreed to channel money raised on this page to the Miirya Village Volunteer Project.

The project began in July 2008 after discussions with VSO Uganda, the community health department Buruli health sub-district and local leaders. VSO provided a small budget which enabled us to train ninety seven village volunteers from Miirya sub county. Most of the volunteers had had previous health experience either as traditional birth attendants or community drug distributors. They proved to be a well motivated group and attended three days of training in preventative health concentrating on reproductive health, immunisations and malaria. As part of the training they carried out a survey in their villages. This confirmed the huge burden of malaria in the community. We decided that the most useful intervention we could support was the distribution of long lasting treated mosquito nets.

We selected three volunteers one from each parish for further training and they became " malaria focal persons". There job is to work with village volunteers to educate villagers about the use of mosquito nets and the need to acces appropriate treatment for malaria.

Malaria is a huge problem in Uganda. Experts estimate that one person dies from malaria every hour. Most of these victims are children under five years or pregnant women. It also has a major impact on education and economic activity.

We have successfully created a demand for nets. Our challenge is to provide nets at an affordable price. The volunteers felt that 3000 ush (about £1) was a good price and this has proved correct. So far we have sold over 1700 nets in the villages. The price of nets has now increased to 8000 ush and we are just about to purchase our fourth consignment from Rwanda. We estimate that we shall need 5000 nets to offer one to each household in Miirya.

Please help us raise the money quickly and reduce the impact of malaria on this rural community. Nets save lives.
