Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit Mike's JustGiving page.
Dr Mike Hughes is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Sue Ryder Care Manorlands and Airedale General Hospital, Yorkshire. He was Nairobi Hospice’s Medical Director for four years in the 1990s and has been a trustee of Hospice Care Kenya (HCK) for many years. Mike will attempt to walk up Mt Kilimanjaro in February this year, having successfully climbed Mt Kenya with friends in January 2011, personally raising almost £2,000 for HCK.
Mike will again be walking with a group of friends. He is self-funding, so any money raised will go directly to Hospice Care Kenya. Mt Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet above sea level. The climb/walk will take 7 days. It is physically demanding and the high altitude makes the walk more challenging. Mike is slightly nervous but excited to attempt this walk and hopes that knowing he is raising some money for HCK will help to inspire him as the air gets thinner and the legs more tired!
Please use the link below to see a moving short video about hospice care in Kenya. Made by Mike Wooldridge (BBC world affairs correspondent), it will make you realise why Mike is still passionate about supporting HCK!
