My story

In July 2009 Pete Modrzejewski and Maciek Rataj will be ascending Mont Blanc - the highest mountain in the Alps and in Western Europe. Please donate to support Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

WHAT ARE YOU DONATING FOR?
Money collected through this site will go towards RSPCA which in current economic climate experiences enormous difficulties and struggles to accommodate all animals. 57% more pets were abandoned last year than in 2007. Read more…

HOW CAN YOUR MONEY HELP?
A £10 can feed an abandoned puppy for a fortnight.
A £25 can help rescue animals in an environmental disaster.
A £50 can help provide emergency equipment for an inspector’s van.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
27th June 2009 we are flying to Geneva and transferring to Chamonix in French Alps to begin ice climbing training and altitude acclimatisation.
Although Mont Blanc (4,810 m or 15,781 ft) might be considered quite a commercial summit it still brings a number of life threatening dangers. We have been preparing for this trip physically and technically since January.

WHERE'S THE THRILL?
Mt Blanc is not easy to climb. Here are some of the threats:
- frequent rock falls in a coloir below Gouter Hut (aka Russian Roulette),
- strong winds on Bosses Ridge, probably one of the most weather extreme ridges in the Alps, causing a lot of deaths when climbers are blown off the ridge to a certain death 1000 meter below,
- dangerous crevasses, especially if one gets off the normal route because off snow storms and low visibility,
- thunderstorm hits the mountain almost daily, so it's essential to get off the mountain before 12 AM,
- altitude sickness.

T
he mountain has claimed approx 5000 lives so far. Peoples who are underestimating the climb, such as light clothed tourists etc, often end up in fatal accidents in stormy weather.

We will be accompanied by a local guide for safety.

We are covering all the costs of the trip from our own pockets.

YOU GIVE MORE THAN YOU THINK
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: RSPCA - National Society gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
