My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

For 60 years Variety Club Children's Charity has been helping sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people.

The Variety Club has an illustrious history stretching back to the golden age of British entertainment. The charity has raised over £200 million in the last 6 decades and improved the lives of more than a million children and young people.

They provide Sunshine Coaches, electric wheelchairs, outings to exciting places, equip children's hospitals and help in many other ways. This is made possible because volunteers from many walks of life give generously of their time and money.

They concentrate on giving help where help is needed, and being the small change which makes a huge difference to the lives of children and young people across the country.

The Variety Club works tirelessly to help improve the lives of sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people up to the age of 19 years across the UK.

The work ranges from providing Sunshine Coaches and funding major hospital appeals to providing basic items that will improve the lives of individual children. Each year they donate electric wheelchairs, specialist beds, car seats, sensory equipment, standing frames and many other items that can change the life of a child in need.

The greatest strength lies in our dedicated army of volunteers from all walks of life, who give so generously of their time and energies to deliver almost all of their work and activities.

In a 60 year history the Variety Club has given

Freedom with over 3,300 wheelchairs

Independence through 4,849 Sunshine Coaches

Hope to almost one million children by raising over £200 million

So what are we doing? Apart of course from going mad...

Trek Jordan 2009

From the 10th - 14th September 2009 we embark on a 40 mile dessert challenge.

Jordan is mainly desert, from the dramatic red sands and towering cliffs of the far south to the stony plains of volcanic basalt in the east.  Also packed into this small country are the lush hills of the north and the plunging rift of the Jordan Valley which runs into the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth.

We finish at the famous Red Rose City of Petra, built more than 2000 years ago, it stretches over several kilometres and is the highlight of this amazing country.

DAY 1: Fly London – Amman (look on a map, as I was unsure)
DAY 2: Begin the trek to a Bedouin village, through a wide wadi area to our overnight camp, a warm up/6 hour welcome to the desert!
DAY 3: Make the 8 hour Trek over the Petra Mountains. Overnight in a campsite just outside Little Petra.
DAY 4: Trek a further 8 hours to the Red Rose city of Petra. The valley is enclosed by sandstone cliffs.
DAY 5: Fly Amman – London!

This is the life
