About Meningitis Research Foundation
Meningitis and septicaemia (the blood poisoning form of the disease) are devastating diseases that can kill in hours and can affect anyone at any time.
- With over 3,000 cases each year, families and communities throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland are affected by these devastating diseases
- Although meningitis and septicaemia can affect anyone at any age, the tragedy is that those most at risk are babies, children and young adults all on the threshold of life
- One in ten people will die and one in seven of those who recover will be left with some after effects such as epilepsy, brain damage and amputations
- Meningitis and septicaemia kill more babies and children in the UK than any other infectious disease
- These diseases are the greatest single cause of acquired deafness in children
Meningitis Research Foundation is at the forefront of the fight against these devastating diseases. The charity's work includes the funding of 21 research projects into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia with a total funding commitment in excess of £2.5 million. It also raises awareness of the diseases and provides information and support to anyone affected by or concerned about meningitis and septicaemia.
This work is funded almost entirely by voluntary donations.
