As you guys will probably know while I was in Ghana I spent a lot of time working at an orphanage in Accra teaching the kids there basic literacy and maths. I know everyone comes up with the typical gap year clichés but the children there really were amazingly friendly and even more willing to learn. Living in Accra I realised that giving these children an education is the most important thing you can give them, and if they grow up not being able to read or write English they will often spend the rest of their lives as street sellers selling water sachets for 3p each, making virtually no profit.

So Ty and I decided to climb the Matterhorn in order to raise money for the UCC which is the charity that funds the orphanage. Any money that you donate will go towards buying books and pencils (none of the children can afford their own materials and a lot share books with brothers and sisters), providing food and water for the children that live in the orphanage itself, and paying for children who are either orphans, or from extremely poor families, to go to school. (Although schooling is meant to be technically free in Ghana in reality the parents have to pay for uniform and materials for their child to be able to attend. This only comes to about £20 a year but there are still many families in Accra who cannot even afford that.)

On the official Zermatt Tourism page it states that 'though in recent years the Matterhorn has become an increasingly fashionable and popular climb it must be stated that it is still one of the most difficult classical climbs in the Alps'. We are not undertaking this lightly and it's definitely not going to be easy, but ANYTHING that you can sponsor us will help to motivate us during the climb and, of course, make a huge difference to the kids in Ghana.

Here is a link to the official UCC page if you want to get more information on and see photos of the orphanage.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me: all the money will go directly to the UCC to run the orphanage and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
