About National Blind Childrens Society
NBCS, founded in December 1995, is a charitable organisation providing information, advice, support and a variety of services to both blind and partially sighted children, from birth to 25, throughout the United Kingdom.
The charity aims to improve the quality of life for visually impaired children and young adults by promoting independence and encouraging self-confidence.
Particular emphasis is made in providing the resources to ensure that educational goals can be achieved.
Our history
The Society was originally called "Help the Blind" and was set up in 1995 by Rod Carne and was renamed The National Blind Children's Society (NBCS) as a charitable organisation.
The primary focus was to provide the resources and equipment needed by blind and visually impaired children to allow them access to social opportunities taken for granted by their sighted peers.
The 1981 Education Act prompted NBCS to supply computer equipment and other items to enable visually impaired children to work independently on their school projects whilst at home, as no state provision exists to provide this equipment.
NBCS also increased the age of young people it can help support to 25 years, whilst in full time education. During its history the charity has run a shop and has been in several locations in Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater.
NBCS moved to its headquarters in Highbridge in 2000. The charity doubled in size within a year of moving into Highbridge.
