My Story
Last August, my beautiful wife of over 25 years and best friend of nearly 30 years (we did meet very young!) was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Mandy had the lump and 16 lymph glands removed, only to be told that the cancer was worse than originally thought, so 4 weeks later had to have a mastectomy. Mandy then had 6 months of the most aggressive chemotherapy available followed by 25 sessions of radiotherapy. 6 weeks later, we were told none of the treatment had worked, and the cancer had spread to Mandy’s liver. The cancer was now terminal. Further treatment did not work, and Mandy lost her battle, leaving us on Wednesday 21st November 2007.
We miss her immensley, she was my inspiration, my friend, my soul mate and a fantastic mother to Kelly and Nikki.
Without the care of the breast cancer care unit, the breast care nurses, Oncologists and other agencies we don’t know how Mandy, my 2 daughters and myself would have coped. After the bombshell of being told the woman you intended to spend the rest of your life with is going to die, the reality of how you are going to cope sets in.
What we are doing
Mandy’s brother, sister some friends and myself are going to trek the Inca Trail in Peru next June to raise money for breast cancer care (administered through the UHNS Charitable Fund). We are taking a particularly difficult route from Cusco to Machu Picchu (which is at altitude of over 4000 meters) and will be short of home comforts such as toilets, showers, clean water or even beer for 8 days! How will I cope (without the beer!!!)?
