So here goes! This year Jane will be 50 and so to celebrate we have decided to set ourselves a personal challenge as well as raise money for good causes. Our challenge is to climb 50 classic rock climbs throughout the UK (and a couple in France) within one year commencing 10th April 2011.Most routes will be fair weather climbing but we have included some winter mountaineering routes as well. From the granite rocks of Cornwall and Finistaire, to Welsh limestone, Peak gritstone, volcanic rock of the Lake District and the older rocks of Scotland, we intend to cover as many rock types and environments as time permits.
14.6.11 update. HOORAY!we have now bagged our tenth climb. This was First Pinnicle Rib on Tryfan North Wales despite hail storms and an dodgy walk in. Katie has also managed a big climb too. Our daughter joined us for our 9th climb at Idwal slabs during May half term. With one fifth completed we are feeling very motivated and proud of our achievements so far.Keep donating!
8.8.11.
Just back from Cornwall, now having completed 16 climbs in total!
We have experienced such a variety of environments and rock types, with Bosigran Ridge and Demo route on granite sea cliffs near Lands End and the mighty Wreckers Slab in North Devon on the Culm Coast, as well as a return to the Gower for 'Isis' and the East Ridge Variation of Great Tor.
Unfortunatly I have sustained a knee injury after Demo Route so we have an enforced break at present, VERY frustrating as this is now the summer hols and the best oppportunities to climb. Still, we hope to be back on the rock in France at the end of August.
21.12.11
We are now getting to the end of 2011 with 23 climbs bagged! After 2 very successful trips to Stanage and the Roaches in November we have re aquianted ourselves with gritstone. My leg is now better and more big thanks to friends who are donating. We hope to get some winter climbs in in January, but for now MERRY XMAS and THANK YOU!
21.1.12
One month on and things are going ewell. We are now up to 26 climbs having visited Tremadoc North Wales where we climbed Christmas Curry and Scratch Arete. Although cold with temps of minus 4 on the journey up, the rock was like Spain . It was glorious climbing!
The weekend before we had been climbing once again in the Wye Valley and bagged our last local climb, Angels Girdle at Wintours Leap. So the total now stands at 26.Most importantly this is about people. I lost my Dad to an agressive strain of Motor Neurone Disease two years ago. I wanted to do something to raise awarenes of this dibilitating/fatal disease and support the charity that both benefits people affected as well as promotes research to bring an end to MND.
We are hoping to attract as many donations as possible, ideally £50 donations equating to £1 per climb. However any donations large or small will be gratefully recieved.
