My story

Thank you for visiting the Smith family's fundraising page. We are raising money for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal (info on left below photo) on behalf of my brother Nigel who was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in November 2007. We hope to raise £5,000 through organising a series of events and challenges throughout the coming months.

The first of these challenges saw me (Lee) take part in the 2008 White Peak Marathon, which was held on 17th May. I chose this event specifically for its severity, as I hoped the more difficult the challenge I had to complete, the more people would support my efforts. I managed to complete the Marathon in 3 hours 38 minutes and 6 seconds, which I was really pleased with for a first attempt - particularly when you consider that the first 11 miles were all uphill!! It was pretty hard work as you can imagine, but nothing like what my brother has had to go through in the past few months - that very much gave me the strength to keep pushing on to the end.

Other events involving other family members are now planned for later in the year, so please keep checking back for what we are doing and how you can help us to achieve our target.

Help from the Moto-Cross and Enduro Community

As the picture opposite shows, Nigel is a very keen and extremely accomplished Moto-Cross and Enduro rider. He achieved National Expert status many years ago, and has won countless events and numerous Championships during his career - including winning 2 Championships in 2007, shortly before his diagnosis. The off-road motorcycle community has been extremely supportive of our efforts so far, and we plan to stage a number of collections and auctions at MX and Enduro events in the coming months. We hope all the riders can support our efforts, and give what they can to help a fellow rider through this very difficult period.
