Story
Skydive for Breast Cancer Care
Every 13 minutes a family receives the devastating news that someone they love has breast cancer.
On the 11th June 2006, I will be taking part in a Tandem Skydive. (I’ll be jumping out of an aircraft flying at 10,000ft, with an instructor strapped to my back) to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.
Breast Cancer Care is the UK's leading provider of information, practical assistance and emotional support for anyone affected by breast cancer. Every year they give direct support to over 22,000 people with breast cancer or breast health concerns through the help lines, peer support and other direct services.
In addition, they respond to two million requests for support and information about breast cancer or breast health concerns through publications, website and outreach work.
All services provided by Breast Cancer Care are free.
How I got involved
Last year a few friends asked me to do the Breast Cancer Care Ribbon walk, not realising how far the walk was I agreed.
8.30am Saturday 25th June 2005 we arrived at Kelmscott Manor, Lechlade our starting point. Our starting time was 9.45am and 11 ½ hours & 27.7 miles later we all arrived at our destination Blenheim Palace, Gloucester. The walk was extremely hard physically but the feeling of achievement & pride outweighs the physical pain. In addition, we raised £1500 for Breast Cancer Care.
The Ribbon Walk 2006 is 20 miles, 7.7 miles shorter than last year. I know I can do the walk so opted to do the skydive. Easy you say, after walking that far anything is possible right? The only thing is I am scared of heights. I won’t go into my attic because I will have to climb a ladder. My legs go to jelly when I have to drive over a bridge!
Why do a skydive?
Because the thought of not being around for my 10 year old son is far more frightening. In the last year, two of his classmates have lost a parent to Cancer. Tough not to cancer I too lost my father 7 years ago & even today, it feels like he passed away yesterday. To lose a parent at any age is very difficult but to lose a mother or father when your just 10 years old must be immensely difficult.
How you can help
A call to the free confidential helpline, offering crucial one-to-one support and information to anyone affected by breast cancer cost £35.00 per call. Last year Breast Cancer Care answered 13,000 calls.
Please donate today & together we can make sure that this & other free services offered by Breast Cancer Care are kept running and free.
