Ataxia UK - Big Bad Bike Ride 2010 · 11 September 2010 ·

10,500 people in the UK have ataxia which is a progressive neurological condition that disrupts the messages sent from our brains to our muscles that are used to move, speak, listen and see. Ataxia UK funds research into finding treatments and a cure and provide support until they are found.

Story

Firstly a giant thank you to all who have sponsored me.160 of us set off in pouring rain [no wind thank God] fron Pitlochry and cycled nearly 75 miles through the mountains. Not the easiest thing I have ever done especially when I got a puncture approx  10 miles from the nearest inhabition!

It took us nearly 6 hours but the first beer on completion was probably the best beer of my life!

The weather did improve through the day and the scenery was stunning but today I am finding it a little difficult to walk

only one accident [not to me] resulting in broken bones and a lot of hurt pride

At least £100000 raised on the day so once again many many thanks

John

The day is fast approaching and preparation has been pitiful!

A 40 mile ride on Sunday made me wish I had a bottom of steel and had not gone out on Saturday night!

The bike is on its way to bonny Scotland where the weather forcast is grim for the weekend..............BUT its too late now so if I am never seen again another big thank you to all of you who have given money to this deserving charity

Photos of before and after to follow on Monday!

I have just sent out my e mail to everyone begging for money and its coming in fast

I just wanted to thank all those who have donated as this really does make a difference to the charity

I did a 45 miler on Sunday into a headwind. Not something I want to do everyday!

However the weight is coming off and i am actually quite looking forward to September

Many many thanks again

John

UPDATE on WWW.bigbadbikeride.com

see above for more details of what jolly japes we get up to!

Thank you all who have donated both on and offline.

I am going to update my photo soon with a new me ONLY one chin now having lost nearly a stone in weight due to the training I have undertaken.

I now use my bike to go into town all the time and have realised how much simpler it is than using the car...........I cannot believe I am typing this as a confirmed carholic! You also get to see a lot more of the city

However I am not so sure on the ride itself as York is flat Pitlochrie is not!but we shall see

Here I go again....Asking for money when times are very tough. However I make no apology as this is a great little charity where every penny raised goes directly to it

We have raised over £550,000 so far and have a target of £1 million from these cycle rides which result in

1. a sore bum

2. sore legs

3. a steaming hangover

4. A sense of profound achievement and thanks

5.A chance to cure something terrible

Life is very tough for kids with these gene issues and there is no cure but the money we raise may find a solution or at least improve the problem so no matter how tough things are for us all economically its not as bad as what they go through.

I promise to keep this page updated with embarrasing photos of my dire training regime so you can all take the mickey out of me next time you see me which must be worth paying for. I am badly unfit and this ride may finally help me to stop smoking and trim excess fat from my once lean and hungry physique [That was in the dim and distant past. I cannot remember when it was that lean and hungry but I can always dream on!] and make me into the object of desire I stil think I am until I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror. Sound familiar anyone?

All donations are all very welcome as every little helps

Frankly it amazes me every year that despite the fact we are all asked, all the time, to make donations people still do and last year I hit my target and hope to do so again.

If you dont want to donate but fancy a weekend in Scotland in rain and wind [normally] cycling in this event there are still a few places left so call me. Its a fun weekend with lots of like minded, unfit people doing their best to pretend they enjoy cycling and are fit! Then ruining it all at the celebratory dinner!

So please help out if at all possible

Many, many thanks

John Reeves
