Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.
In September I lost a dear friend of mine, Rosemary Edwards, to suicide. I considered her my sister, and it has been difficult coming to terms with the implications of all that has happened. As a result of this a very good friend of mine, Lewis Morgan, and myself have decided to put our cycling skills to good use in memory of Rosemary and in an attempt to raise money for PAPYRUS (registered charity 1070896) who work to raise awareness about the high rate of young suicides in Britain, to increase availability and knowledge of preventative methods such as helplines, and to erase the detrimental stigma of suicide within society.
What we're doing is cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End (aka JOGLE) in August next year to raise as much money as we can for PAPYRUS. A total distance of nearly 1000 miles (1600km). We plan to get from one end of Great Britain to the other in 10 days of cycling!
We are now in possession of a first draft route for LEJOG thanks to the wonderful site: http://www.cycle-route.com/ - Day 10: Lands End to Okehampton (92 miles) Day 9: Okehampton to Bristol (95 miles) Day 8: Bristol to Shrewsbury (110 miles) Day 7: Shrewsbury to Bolton (65 miles) Day 6: Bolton to Windemere (68 miles) Day 5: Windermere to Hawick (84 miles) Day 4: Hawick to Dollar (78 miles) Day 3: Dollar to Aviemore (104 miles) Day 2: Aviemore to Tain (59 miles) Day 1: Tain to John o'Groats (80 miles) TOTAL: 835 miles - We have been advised that we will 1. get lost, and 2. add extra miles on the hilly bits - this is why we have allowed ourselves a couple of 'easy' days such as 65/68miles to soak these lovely extra miles up on the green hills of east Wales!
Our current fundraising target is £2,000, but ideally we would like to double that amount. So dig deep everybody, and donate money to PAPYRUS to help raise awareness about young suicide. Every little helps! If you can only spare 50p, then please do! ALSO: If you want us to do something extra on our ride, such as complete the trip wearing y-fronts on the outside of our cycling gear, then you must donate a minimum of £100 for us to undertake such absurdities. Any ideas, within reason, will be welcome in order to help you donate to PAPYRUS!
If you do not feel happy donating online then please send me a cheque, made out to PAPYRUS, at: 'Avenair', Tavells Lane, Marchwood, Southampton, HANTS, SO40 4WH.
We are giving the majority of the proceedings to PAPYRUS, with a very small amount being used to help us fund the trip (£150). Please check back for news updates. We will be keeping you up to date with our training, changes to our route, and anything generally interesting about our fundraising campaign.
NEWS: - Lewis and I are now officially in training. If you see us jogging around, cycling, walking, or going swimming wearing our PAPYRUS t-shirts (or even if you see us without them) then toot your horn/throw money at us!
- We now have a first draft of our JoGLE route (read up)
- We have now contacted a number of corporate sponsors to help us raise money for LEJOG, keep your fingers crossed for us!
- We now have a facebook event courtesy of Jennifer Edwards, although you must be a member of facebook to see the page: (Please be aware that you do NOT have to do the trip with us to join the group!) http://unikent.facebook.com/event.php?eid=7027600677 - A number of pledges have been made to us. We have: 1. Steven Moulster - 2p a mile 2. Sue Thompson - 3p a mile 3. Stephen Collins - £30 for completion - Scottish Youth Hostels Association have sent us wayfarer passes, which gives us entirely free stays in their hostels in Scotland! A fantastic result. -The Students Union from Taunton's College (Southampton), has donated £500 to our cause!!! -We have now changed our route to John o'Groats to Lands End (JoGLE) for ease of transportation and because the finish line will be closer to home. -Lewis and I are coming home from university in a couple of weeks, so expect to see us in training around Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshrie and the Isle of Wight!!
