Our vision of women’s empowerment - and what makes us different – is that we don’t just see women as instruments to deliver things like malaria nets or food relief. Above all we want women to be able to make their own choices and decisions. There are many barriers for women– cultural practices such as female genital mutilation; attitudes about what is appropriate women; economic factors; insecurity and migration. We focus our work around four areas that we think most empower women: leadership, decent work, sexual and reproductive choice, access to justice. We are going to need to raise at least £250,000 this year to keep this work alive. Case study: donations in action

One World Action support women workers by increasing women’s earning power and improving working conditions.

We work with the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in India - a membership organisation of over one million women workers. Our groundbreaking project in Delhi links high street companies such as Next and Monsoon to buy directly from women embroiderers who work at home. As a result 1,000 women are now being paid on time and have seen their wages double. As a result of this project companies are finally recognising the existence of homeworkers in global supply chains. One of the women who has benefited tells us about the impact this has has on her life:

"I has been an embroiderer since sI was 12. Since joining SEWA I can now pay for my two children to go to school. I also get to meet other women – I used to be very isolated and unable to leave my home. Homeworking is the best choice for many women so it must become fairly paid and safe." Farida, Delhi
