The Order of Malta has been active in Kenya since 2002 through Malteser International, our humanitarian aid agency. Malteser International supports the Kenyan government by running ten clinics in the slums and prisons in Nairobi to diagnose and treat tuberculosis and HIV. We currently have a catchment of 3 million people and the work we have done to date has been awarded by the Kenyan government on two separate occasions.
The key to the success of this project has been the 60 Community Health Workers. These volunteers live in the slum areas and seek out TB sufferers to bring into our clinics for diagnosis and treatment. When required they also care for the patients in their own homes.
Order of Malta urgently needs to obtain funding towards the cost of continuing our work in Kenya and to enable project sustainability and future development.
