Hey all. Thanks for visiting my sponsorship page. I’m running my first ever 10K run on 12 of July and want to raise as much money as possible for my chosen charity AFP (Asian Foundation for Philanthropy). For those of you that do not know me, I myself am Blind.
In 2008, I was privileged to work as a volunteer with AFP in India. My Project site was an organisation named Mitra Joythi which helps train the Blind for everyday life as well as empowering them by helping them to gain employment and become economically independent. It was a fantastic time for me and I had the chance to undertake some really exciting activities which included:
* Donation of Visual Aids (i.e glasses, magnifiers, electronic video magnifiers, DAISY talking book players, writting frames, dictaphones, talking watches and Braille labelling equipment)
* We conducted Training on specialist software such as JAWS and Zoomtext which allows the visually impaired to fully use the computer
* Conducted Mobility training (latest walking stick technology and techniques)
* Conducted training on how to use DAISY talking book players.
* Conducted low vision assessments to identify the students mgnification needs
* Conducted individual assessments to identify acedemic, mobility and employment needs.
* Setup a Resource center displaying a variety of aids and equipment, training materials to enable visually impaired.
* Conducted Site Safety / accessibility survey and provided recommendations. (Implementation was followed up by AFP)
* Met corporate organisations in India to identify any possible job opportunities and requirements for the students.
This is just one small example of the projects that AFP are involved with. They are an organisation that are making some big steps to improve peoples lives. I have seen this first hand and hence the reason I am taking part in this sponsored event.
