About Parkinson's Disease Society

What is Parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition affecting movements, such as walking, talking and writing.  There are 120,000 people with Parkinson’s in the UK and around 10,000 are diagnosed with the condition each year.  Of those diagnosed, one in 20 people is under the age of 40.

Who are we?
The Parkinson's Disease Society is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to supporting all people with Parkinson’s.  Since 1969, we have been working with and for people with Parkinson’s, their families and carers.

Support - We have over 69,000 supporters, including 29,000 members.  We also coordinate a network of over 330 branches and support groups around the UK.  Run by volunteers, they offer support, information, social activities and practical help at a local level.

Information – We provide advice and information on all aspects of Parkinson’s, including drug treatments, surgery, therapies, social and health care rights, benefits, insurance, employment, and driving.

Advice – We have a freephone Helpline staffed by nurses and specialist advisors offering information, support and a sympathetic ear.  We currently answer around 20,000 calls per year.

Research – We have invested over £35million researching the cause, prevention and cure of Parkinson’s, as well as looking at ways to improve treatments and the lives of those with the condition.

Education – We provide education to health and social care professionals to increase their understanding of this complex condition.

Campaigns – We campaign for high quality support, care, treatment and research to benefit people with Parkinson's and their carers.

How can you help?
Join our team!  The Parkinson's Disease Society is totally dependent on voluntary donations.  Without the generosity and dedication of our supporters we wouldn’t be able to continue our work to support all people affected by Parkinson’s.  Whether you want to run, trek, walk, skydive or Party for Parkinson’s we can offer you plenty of support and advice with your fundraising!
