Equids in the developed world comprise just 16% of those on the planet. Around 95% of the remaining 100 million mules, donkeys and horses are used in hard labour, quite literally providing the horse power that drives family units, communities, farming and local industry.

The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA, www.spana.org) is an organisation dedicated to getting veterinary aid to these animals. In Morocco alone there are ten SPANA clinics working with local vets to help the country’s 1.9 million equids, of which 90,000 may be treated in one year. 

I am a newly qualified from Liverpool Vet School, and want to help SPANA make a difference. In November this year I will be undertaking a sponsored 3,100 mile motorcycle trip from Leahurst (Liverpool vet School) to Marrakech (SPANA HQ) to raise money for SPANA. I will then be working as a volunteer vet for three months at the Midelt SPANA clinic in theAtlas Mountains, during which time I will also be carrying out a study on harness-induced injuries.  

Sponsoring me just ½p a mile (£15.00) would finance the full treatment of one equid in Morocco.
