Story

Hello and Welcome!

However you found your way here, I'm glad that you've stumbled upon my page raising funds for Variety Club UK.

Inspired by my friend and colleague Kenny Simmons, who celebrated his 40th birthday with the creation of a personal 'bucket list', and the stunning efforts of the likes of John Bishop and David Walliams, I intend to mark the passing of my next birthday with a challenge encompassing two of the country's major landmarks.

The first, on August 18th, is a twelve hour endurance challenge which asks competitors to complete as many 4-mile loops of the Humber Bridge on foot as they physically can between 7pm and 7am the next morning. More information on 'Hell On The Humber' can be found here!

Then, if I manage to survive 'Hell', I'll be competing in the Great North Run (and aiming to beat my 'Personal Best') as a 'warm-down' on September 16th (currently it's 01:27:46).

If you hadn't already realised, then yes, I admit it, I do love running! That not withstanding, the challenges I'm taking on are massive and sitting here, typing this message to you, I struggle to comprehend how I'll stay on my feet for 12 hours or beat the crowds to a PB at the world's most popular half-marathon... I will though, because Variety Club is a fantastic cause that deserves my commitment.

'Improving Children's Lives Every Day', the charity celebrated it's 50th anniversary in my area last year and has provided items as diverse as specialist computers, manual and powered wheelchairs, walking frames, and more than 100 Variety Sunshine Coaches over recent years.

A sunshine coach costs £27,000, but even as little as £10 is enough to send a child on a 'Variety in Action Day'. £250 will provide critical developmental equipment such as sensory and learning toys, whilst £400 can fund an adaptive medical bed, making the life of the recipient a little easier.

Whatever you help us to raise, thank you for your support. Any donation is appreciated, and if you were planning on sending a card or buying me a present this year, please don't - nothing would make me happier than if you donated it to Variety Club through sponsoring me instead.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep (as I will most certainly have to do!) and donate now!

Wish me luck...

Paul.
