My story

Hi there and a big thanks for looking at this page!

We've smashed the target already but lets keep it going!!

I’m running this year’s Reading Half Marathon for Pancreatic Cancer UK (PCUK). It’s all about the sponsorship and the more we can raise the more research can be put into this truly devastating and aggressive form of cancer.

My family knows exactly what effects this has – we lost my mum to pancreatic cancer in October 07 after a very brave fight. She tried her best to ‘hit it head on’, but as so often it was diagnosed too late and she didn’t have a chance. At the time you wonder in disbelief how something this awful could go undetected and simply be misdiagnosed as a routine gall bladder blockage needing removal, but after researching a fair bit we realised we are certainly not alone, the facts are simple – there just isn’t enough funding for research into early detection and treatment.

Pancreatic cancer statistics make grim reading. It’s very hard to diagnose early on and many victims survive for only a few months after diagnosis. And the number of people still alive five years later is below 5% - the lowest survival rate of all cancers in the UK. (Comparable survival rates for breast cancer in women run at 77% and 95% for testicular cancer). It is the 10th commonest cancer in the UK.

Pancreatic Cancer UK http://www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/ is committed to helping fund research to fight pancreatic cancer as well as tackling awareness of the disease and providing a national support network.

So with your help I’d like to raise as much money as possible to help give others a better chance of beating it! I’ve managed to ‘persuade’ some very kind chaps from my workplace to run with me (or let me chase after them as they are all much fitter than me!!), so a big thanks from me goes to Martin Teversham, Stuart Reynolds and Tran Doan.

Please dig deep into those pockets and your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Pancreatic Cancer will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Please feel free to send this link to anyone you feel may want to donate to this very good cause and remember that you can still donate after the race!

Once again, thanks for looking at this page and your support!

Paul
