What are we doing?
Pete Stockall and Mike Mogford have decided to undertake a truly epic trans-continental adventure in the name of charity this summer. On the 30th July they will set off with 40 other teams on the last great adventure on earth, the 'Mongol Rally'! 9000 miles, 2 deserts, 5 mountain ranges, roads ranging from bad to non-existent, no support crew and all this in a car that was swapped for a bag of crisps. The Mongol Rally pits the worst of the world of motoring against some of the worst terrain on earth.
The challenge is to drive a car with an engine smaller than one litre, from the east end of London to the east end of the world: Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Pete and Mike (or Two Men Went to Mowgolia) have opted for 'Daisy' a trusty 1988 Citroen 2CV which pumps out a maximum of 602cc, 0-60 in 26 seconds. The route will pass through 11 countries, France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, back into Kazakhstan, Russia and then Mongolia. In order to finish in around 3 weeks, the teams will be sleeping in their cars and driving pretty much non-stop.
The Mongol Rally is a charity event with each team raising at least £1000. 60% Of the money expected to be raised will be donated to 'Send a Cow', an innovative organisation based in Bath that combats poverty in Africa by supplying poor rural communities with livestock, training and advice to help them become more self-reliant. The gift of livestock combats malnutrition by providing valuable food sources, such as milk and eggs, as well as increasing the amount of fresh vegetables available through the use of manure on the land. Surplus supplies can be sold to help generate an income that can be invested to secure a better future, such as sending children to school.
The remaining 40% of the charity money will be donated to 'Save the Children'. We will be donating specifically to their Mongolian projects. There will also be the opportunity for interested parties to visit the projects when we are in Mongolia to see where some of the hard work has gone. A separate justgiving account is set up to donate to save the children.
The Rally is also working with the Mongolian Embassy to find a beneficial use for the rally cars that make it to Mongolia. More details of the rally can be found at www.mongolrally.co.uk.
