Racing the Planet are ultra marathon endurance races based on running across some of the worlds most inhospitable regions. This year one of the races is in nd I have decided to give myself the huge challenge of participating and finishing the event.

I have completed triathlons in the past, and raised funds for Addenbrookes Children's Oncology. I was pleased that I had really pushed myself and knew I wanted to continue raising money for charity. So, I looked around for another personal challenge.

Then I found it, "six marathons in five days,” bingo! And raise as much money as I could for two very worthy charities.

The Racing the Planet: Australia 2010 - 250km / 155 mile event has been described by organisers as ‘life enhancing for all, life changing for many.’

It takes place in the Kimberley region with ankle-twisting boulders, stones and arid desert, where temperatures reach 40ºC, and one of its gruelling stages is 50 miles long. I will be running, traversing mountain ranges and climbing through steep gorges just to name a few. Some areas I will have to negotiate by swimming, while carrying everything I need to survive for 6 days. This includes food and survival equipment. Each day incorporates many potential dangers, getting lost for one, not forgetting the snakes, spiders and crocodiles !

I always like to aim high, but I have never attempted anything like this before. I'm training five times a week, getting up most mornings at 5am to get the miles in alongside sessions in the gym. Although running 10 miles around Saffron Walden, its probably not the same as tackling one of the world’s most hostile regions!

My family and friends think I'm mad and maybe they are right, but with my stubborn streak I think I might just pass the finish line! If you want to learn more about Race the Planet they have a great website and have amazing pictures of the course.

All expenses of the race, flights, support, entrance fee and other costs will be paid entirely by myself and I will be taking two weeks leave to attend the event.

I have also decided to try and raise as much money as possible for the following.

http://www.accuro.org.uk/

Accuro “Autistic Children Respite Care” Reg No. 1094736

and

Injured Soldiers Charity Fund (Afghanistan) – Carver Barracks

This fund enables the Regiment to provide immediate assistance and to bridge any gaps for requirements which are not covered elsewhere.

Cheques – made payable to 33 Engineer Regiment Central Bank, and a note to be made on the reverse stating Carver Barracks Injured Soldiers Fund.

To sponsor my desert run or pledge support for my nominated charity or would like further information, you can contact myself on 0775 1150285 or e-mail me at paddymonster@yahoo.co.uk

Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me. ACCURO gets your money and, if you're a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
