We help blind veterans to discover a life beyond sight loss

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I first heard about the work of Blind Veterans UK at a presentation given to my Lions club by a veteran called Wendy.  She told us all about the support she herself had received and what a difference the rehabilitation and training offered at their centres had made in ensuring she was able to lead an independent and fulfilling life.

That evening when I returned home I could not stop thinking about the impact sight-loss would have on my own life.  As I'm sure all of my friends will agree, I'm a very active person with many interests and I couldn't imaging how I would continue with every day activities such as fetching my paper, doing the shopping, preparing my own meals let alone loved past times such as kayaking and my work with the Lions.

I felt I had to take action.  I decided to set myself a fundraising target for Blind Veterans UK of £1,000 - a target I would reach by raising funds via a sponsored Kayak along the river Thames.

When my supporters found out more about the work of Blind Veterans UK they were compelled to dig deep and I smashed my target, raising a grand total of £3500.

Since completing my challenge 3 years ago, I have continued to support Blind Veterans UK's fundraising activity for its Llandudno Centre, which is frequently used by veterans based in Liverpool and the Wirral, by carrying out collections and encouraging other Lions and local contacts in my area to do their own fundraising for the charity.  My efforts have generated almost £11,000 to date.

3 years has passed since my Kayak Challenge and I felt it was time to do another big push to help raise funds, so on the 28th September I will be negotiating Velocity - a mile long zip wire that will have me travelling at speeds of up to 100mph.

I would appreciate any donations you are able to give to help me reach my £1,000 target for this challenge.  You can also help by sharing links to this page on your facebook pages, twitter accounts or simply emailing it to your colleagues, family and friends.
