As you may know my 14 year old teenage daughter was diagnosed with cancer last year. Her treatment entailed 6 months of chemotherapy in ward 2 of RHSC. Happily she seems to have responded to the treatment. We were most grateful for the skill, care, and devotion shown to her by the staff of all grades. It made me really proud of our NHS.

One deficiency we noted however were the lack of facilities specifically for the physical and emotional needs of teenagers.

During her treatment my daughter became friendly with another patient called Zoe.

Zoe, in her approach to her cancer, was an inspiration to all who met her - staff, fellow patients, relatives and friends. Sadly Zoe lost her fight last September and died several days before her 18th birthday.

In commemoration of her an appeal has been launched to raise funds to provide facilities in Edinburgh specifically for teenagers with cancer.

In gratitude for the care our daughter received, I would like support this cause. I am therefore going to spend Fri 11th April working as a trainee hospital porter rather than my usual job as an A/E consultant. I'm sure I will learn a lot from the experience. I will donate the difference between my salary as a consultant and a porter for that day to the fund.

In addition I'm looking for as many people as possible to sponsor me for the day. I'm planning to do a 10 hr shift. If those that could afford it would sponsor me £1 per hour we could raise a significant amount of money for this special cause.

All funds raised through Remember Zoe go towards building a specialist Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at the Western General Hospital or the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.  Zoe was also passionate to help teenagers who had lost their hair due to chemotherapy, as she had.  A percentage of TCT Remember Zoe funds go towards the better wigs campaign.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to helping teenagers fight cancer.  Incidence rates are now higher in teenagers and young adults than in children, yet survival rates fall behind those of children and older adults.
