Update! (27/09/09)

Well, with less than a week to go before the big day I'm happy to say my training has gone pretty well, despite having to put up with one or two minor sprains along the way. I ran my last big run at the weekend of 11.5 miles in 115 minutes and have stuck to an average rate of 'a mile every 10 minutes' throughout the training so am quietly confident that I won't need to jump on the 'slackers bus' after 3 hours :) I'd really, really, really like to complete the course in under 2 hours but this means pulling out all the stops (quite literally) on Sunday.

More importantly than my crazy target times, thanks to everyone who has sponsored me. I've been genuinely taken aback at the amount of support that a couple of emails and facebook updates can generate :) Obviously, there's still loads of time to sponsor, you can even do it after the run if you need proof that I actually did it :)

Hi Everyone,

Okay, in an act of what could only be described as shear madness, I've signed up to the "New Balance English Half Marathon" that's taking place in October. According to the Warrington Guardian, this will be Warrington's very first Half Marathon event (although not according to two of my Dad's old medals that say 'Warrington Half Marathon' on them from the mid-80s, so I think their researchers need to do a little more umm... research :)

Having not done any real running since high school apart from maybe running for a bus or running after the infamous Milo, The run starts and ends at Victoria Park, with a nice leisurely stroll around Appleton in between. Having said that, apparently if I don't complete the course in under three hours then there's a chance that I'll face the humiliation of being picked up by a safety bus, so my pride's at stake as well as my feet!

This is obviously going to be quite a challenge, although preparations are already underway. I've invested in some new 'go-faster-stripe' trainers, as well as new, streamlined haircut. I've also managed to run a total of 2.5 miles (count'em!) without even stopping! So, I only have to to run just over five times this distance on the day and I'll be fine !

On a more serious note, I've decided to run this in aid of the "British Heart Foundation" in memory of my Dad. Not only will this allow me to (hopefully) raise some cash for a really worthwhile cause, but also give me a great incentive to beat that safety bus!

If you are feeling generous enough to sponsor me, please don't forget to check that 'Gift Aid' box if you are a UK taxpayer. This will ensure that the government will spend at least a little of our money doing the right thing!

Thanks a lot,
Pete.
