My story

Pilgrimage Update: June 2009

‘A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.’

Was it said or written by Lao-Tzu or Confucius? Basically it doesn’t matter – it is true!

So far this journey has covered about 700 miles over the past five years leaving 300 more to reach Santiago de Compostela. I rate it equally with my experience of being a Global Teacher and working for Link Community Development, an international Non-Governmental Organization. Although many folk complete the last 500 miles across the Pyrenees to Compostela in 31 days, I really value the slower, more extended stages that of necessity I have had to take. The scenery is breath-taking, the terrain and temperatures often challenging and the sheer experience of following this 1000 year old Pilgrimage route is utterly life-enhancing.

I have been involved with Link for several years and during that time have seen some of the amazing results that have already been achieved in many of its programmes in Africa and most recently in Malawi. In collaboration with local education departments, schools and their communities, the effect of Link's work is both far-reaching and sustainable. From teacher training to international school links, this work is currently having an impact on the lives of over half a million children.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Link Community Development will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, more than 20% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks to those who have already so generously supported me – and I hope I shall achieve or exceed my target with the next three stages. I cannot be certain when these will be as a third equally exciting dimension has recently been added to my life: that of looking after my little Granddaughter, Gracie. I imagine that by the time Santiago is on the horizon, she will be able to walk into the city with me!

With best wishes,

Frances
