CF Trust is a charity which is very close to our hearts. A close friend has a son the same age as Pip who has CF. When I complain that I am busy or tired I think of the lives they lead and how they must cope living with this dreadful illness.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease. Over two million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis - around 1 in 25 of the population. If two carriers have a child, the baby has a 1 in 4 chance of having Cystic Fibrosis. Each week, five babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis. Each week, three young lives are lost to Cystic Fibrosis.
Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Every day a CF child must take a multitude of drugs and receive physiotherapy twice a day.
Currently the average life expectancy is around 31 years, although improvements in treatments and the funding of research mean a baby born today could expect to live for longer.
The money we raise will go to support families with CF and fund further research that will go to isolate the gene which causes this dreadful illness. Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
