My story

Planet London is a volunteer run website. Whilst we don’t want to make money for ourselves, we want to celebrate the good work of local and national LGBT charities that exist to make all our lives better.

To this end, twice a year, Planet London chooses an LGBT charity to support. Our website is free to use, we ask that if you find it beneficial, please consider a donation to our chosen charity, even £1 can help.

Additionally, any surplus cash made on this website through advertising, will be given to our chosen charity.

From January 2011 to June 2011, we're supporting London Friend.

London Friend is trying to raise money to buy the building from the Council.

The charity has been given just six months in which to raise the money to buy the premises from Islington Council, or potentially face eviction or substantial rent hikes. The news comes as London Friend is preparing to take over the running of Antidote, the LGBT drugs and alcohol service which is closing due to government funding cuts. London Friend was given just three weeks' notice in the run-up to Christmas that our building was being put up for auction. After a lobbying campaign against this decision, supported by local MPs and Lord Smith of Finsbury, the Council agreed to remove the building from the auction. London Friend has now been given six months in which to raise the money to buy the building from the Council.

With our support, we hope London Friend will be able to stay in its premises and continue to provide essential services to the LGBT community in London. London Friend exists to promote the social, emotional, physical and sexual health and well-being of lesbian, gay and bisexual people, including transgender people who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual and all those unsure of their sexuality.
