Help 750 girls in Kenya to help themselves by establishing a beekeeping training unit at a local school. Honey sales will fund future costs to ensure the project’s long term sustainability.

Poverty in rural Kenya is widespread despite the many opportunities that exist to make a good living. Targeted skills education offers a way to turn this situation around. Although women play a vital role in earning family income girls often get even less agricultural education than their male counterparts. By training girls from poor backgrounds in beekeeping, this project will not only teach them a profitable life-skill, but their school will generate income to fund places for the most needy.
By providing skills & business training to 750 girls in beekeeping this project will help them support themselves & their families – and by selling honey produced while teaching, the school will be able to fund scholarships to assist the most needy.
Not only will this program help to reduce long-term poverty amongst girls’ families by teaching them useful skills for earning a living, but by demonstrating the rewards of education it will encourage parents to keep their children in school.

Sweet Anticipation! By Jim Stephenson - Programme Manager After waiting for swarming season to arrive, many hives have now been colonised and it is expected that the remaining hives will be colonised soon.
The colonisation has worked like the snowball effect: The rate of colonisation increases with every swarm that takes it home in the Lwak Apiary.
All agricultural teaching staff at the school (and a few more) have received comprehensive training from a local bee keeping education officer and are enjoying sharing their newly founded skills with the students.
We're all looking foward to the upcoming harvest!

In May 2007 Teach A Man To Fish delivered a fully equipped 9 hive apiary to Lwak Girls High School in Western Kenya using the generous funds donated via Global Giving. A supporting training program for pupils and teachers was also established.
Girls at the school, such as Susan Odongo of Form 3, come from poor farming backgrounds where life after school means supporting themselves and their families through smallscale farming and informal businesses. Susan believes Bee Keeping
“is a valuable skill which will allow me to earn good money, even from a small piece of land”
Bee Keeping is a growing industry in Kenya, where demand for honey outstrips supply, keeping prices high. Royal Jelly and Wax can also be sold through Bee Keeping, and Bees increase the pollination rates and fecundity of flowering crops in their vicinity.
The high profits associated with Bee Keeping will help improve both the quality and availability of education at Lwak. This has generated a tremendous enthusiasm for the project from both staff and teachers.
Agricultural Teacher Meshack Omondi explains that:
“income will be used to purchase educational materials and to subsidize the fees of the poorest students, who currently struggle to meet the amounts required for their attendance.”
The establishment of this apiary is a big step forward for providing rural enterprise training, vocational skills and income for Lwak High School. Whilst part of the income generated from the project will be invested in expanding the apiary, continued support via Global Giving will allow it to reach the target of 20 Hives, allowing more and more students to continue to learn and become ‘Rural Entrepreneurs’.
