Providing Bednets to 200,000 Ugandans

This project supplies mosquito nets to 300 staff at Kisiizi Hospital, Uganda, and the 200,000 patients served by the hospital, preventing them from getting malaria.

What is the problem the project is addressing?

Malaria globally kills over a million people each year most of whom are defenseless children. Malaria is the most prevalent disease of patients presenting to Kisiizi Hospitall and it also disables many of our capable staff. Providing insecticide treated bed nets to patients and staff and educating them on why they should use the nets, how to care for them and store them will reduce the death and disability from malaria.

How will this project solve the problem?

Each patient admitted to Kisiizi Hospital will be given a bed net and personally educated as to why they should use it, how to hang it, care for it and store it. Since most of these patients have malaria, they are highly motivated.

What is the potential long-term impact of this project?

This project will provide bed nets for as many as possible patients of Kisiizi Hospital thus ending the cycle of repeated attacks of malaria and repeated cycles of death and permanent disability from this preventable disease.

U. ofColorado Med Students monitor bed net project

Dave Hibbard, MD, MPH

On June 8, two medical students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, under our supervision, will depart for Kisiizi Hospital, Uganda, where they will deliver  hundreds of new bed nets to the hospital and monitor the progress of this project.  We need 1800 bed nets to protect the staff of 300 of the hospital since each staff member has an average of six members to their family. After this goal has been accomplished we need additional thousands of bed nets to provide to the patients who are served by the hospital estimated to be 150,000 to 200,000.

Of note is the fact that the hospital, under the medical supervision of Dr. Tonny Tumwesigye, is negotiating with the Peace Corps to have a Peace Corps Volunteer assigned for two years to the hospital to assist with health education including "on the ground" monitoring of the bed net project. Dr. Tonny, as he is called, received an award in 2010 from the President of Uganda, Mr. Museveni, for being one of the 12 Best Health Care Provider Leaders in the country.

Every hospital bed has a net!

Dave Hibbard, MD, MPH

Our first goal has been achieved: providing enough bed nets that there is now a net hanging over every bed at the 250 bed Kisiizi Hospital where we work a month each year. Our next goal is to make sure that every one of the 300 staff members at the hospital and their families, which average six people per family, have enough nets to protect them. If the staff gets sick with malaria, the hospital does not function.

In June, 2011, we will be sending 2 medical students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, to Kisiizi Hospital for six weeks to check on our next delivery of bed nets to the hospital. These two medical students were previously Peace Corps Volunteers in Africa for over 2 years each, and have pledged to work in Africa as their life careers after they finish their medical training.

Please help us help the Ugandan people by supplying them with insecticide treated bed nets, enough for everyone. Many thanks.

We are making progress!!!

Dave Hibbard, MD, MPH

My wife, Dr. Chris, and I spent the month of April, 2010, working at Kisiizi Hospital, in remote SW Uganda. We arrived with 50 insecticide-treated bed nets in our van, with another 100 nets to arrive after we left---all of them for use by the Hospital for staff and patients. FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE WE STARTED THIS PROJECT IN 2005, EVERY SINGLE BED IN THIS 250 BED HOSPITAL HAD A BED NET HANGING OVER IT!!! Now we need to get more nets to patients in the community!

Kisiizi Hospital is located in South West Uganda about an hour drive north of the Rwanda border and an hour drive east of the Congo border (and the Ugandan Gorilla National Park). The hospital is powered by a waterfall which provides hydroelectric power----essential for running a hospital.

We take medical students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine to the hospital each year who work there for 6 weeks. So far we have taken 7 students there and they have a life-changing experience.

EXCITING NEWS

Dave Hibbard, MD, MPH

1) Oldest daughter, Devin Hibbard, who lives in Uganda fill time and runs the Bead For Life program in Kampala, has found a less expensive source of bed nets at $5 each! 2) Erin Boswell, now a fourth-year medical student at the University of Colorado will go to Uganda on January 19, 2010, and distribute another 400 bed nets to the staff and patients at Kisiizi Hospital. Erin's first trip to Kisiizi Hospital was in the summer of 2007 when she delivered her first 400 bed nets. Thanks to all of you donors for making this possible.

Bed nets for Ugandans

Dave Hibbard, MD, MPH

Three students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine who are in the Global Health Track just got back from Kisiizi Hospital Uganda, 8/1/09, where they distributed 150 insecticide treated bed nets to the staff and patients. They also did a survey of the need for more bed nets and found that each staff member had at least 2 to 3 other people in their homes who did not have bed nets and still need them. Our intention is to supply these nets as soon as possible. Thanks for your generous donations.

Dave Hibbard, MD

On June 17, 2009, 3 female first year medical students from the University of Colorado will travel to Kisiizi Hospital, southwest Uganda, where they will spend 6 weeks checking on and continuing the distribution of Insecticide Treated Mosquito Bednets to the Nursing Students (100), Staff (300 plus an average of 5 family members each) and patients (thousands) of the hospital.

These nets were purchased partly with donations provided through Global Giving, and are greatly appreciated by all who receive them.

Latest Update from the Field

Bednets have saved lives! By Dave Hibbard, MD, Project Leader, August 16, 2008

Since this time last year, insecticide treated bed nets are now hanging over each bed in the Pediatric, Isolation, Maternity and Rehabilitation wards of Kisiizi Hospital in remote Southwest Uganda. The nurses who staff these wards at night report that they, the nurses, are no longer being bitten by mosquitos at night, just by having these bed nets in place. The insecticide chemicals provide a barrier to mosquitos extending out about 15 feet ! We now need to get bed nets for the 6 other wards of the hospital and for the families of the Kisiizi Hospital staff. Your donations can save lives. Please help us.

New bednets distributed!

Dave Hibbard

We just returned August 9, 2007, from 3 weeks at Kisiizi Hospital where we distributed free Insecticide Treated Mosquito Bed Nets to the Nursing Students (90) and staff (over 300) of the entire hospital. The students and staff were thrilled with their new bed nets. We were shocked to find that only 20% of the staff and students had a bed net. They now have bed nets thanks to your generous donations. When the staff get sick with malaria, the hospital care for patients is severely compromised. Our next step is to get more bed nets which we can take out to the villages. Please help us with this effort.
