Water for Sudan will build a well with hand pump in Southern Sudan to bring the first fresh, clean water to a village. Girls & women will no longer have to walk miles each day to get water they need.
Each day hundreds of thousands of people in Southern Sudan drink unclean water they have spent hours walking to gather. For their very survival people are forced to drink from these contaminated waters and often become ill. What water is available to the mostly destitute people of Southern Sudan is most often found in shallow wells or surface ponds, often many hours’ walk from home villages. The water collected in these arduous journeys is often contaminated with parasites and cholera.
Having fresh clean water every day eliminates many causes of disease. Not having to walk for miles each day allows more freedom for girls and women. Girls can often attend school. Women can create small gardens and cottage industries.
Water brings life to these villages. People can remain in their village year-round. Homes and schools can be built; markets spring up. Medical clinics can be established. Water for Sudan estimates each new well serves 1,000 - 1,500 more people.

Dear Global Giving donors,
Our goal of $15,000 has been reached and our "Global Giving" well will be drilled this coming drilling season (2011-12). Thank you for your generosity in funding this well! The Water for Sudan teams have just finished the 2010-11 season, drilling 28 wells this year, which brings our grand total to 104 wells since 2005. While the WFS crews were never in danger, they did need to wait several weeks after the January 9, 2011 referendum, in which South Sudan voted overwhelming to become independent from North Sudan, to be certain they could drill safely. Our founder and president Salva Dut was back in the US briefly this spring and is now back in South Sudan, constructing a new compound for our drilling rigs and equipment. He is very much looking forward to independence for his country and is glad he will be in South Sudan for their independence day on July 9. While we have just finished the 2010-11 drilling season, preparation has already begun for 2011-12, which will begin in November or December. Thank you for being a part of our success. Dear Global Giving donors,
Greetings from Rochester, NY. Our president and founder Salva Dut has returned for a brief trip to the US to attend to various business matters, so we can share some details of this year's drilling season, which is coming to a close.
Water for Sudan, Inc. has drilled 21 wells so far this year. We are very pleased to have done so well in an uncertain time. Salva and his crew were able to drill before the January referendum, and then needed to stop for a few weeks as they watched the situation unfold. Happily the referendum passed easily. It took a few weeks for Salva to know for sure that it would be safe for the crew to resume drilling.
As Salva attends to business in the US the crew in Sudan will continue drilling through the end of the dry season in May.
Our "Global Giving " well is almost fully funded! So far we have raised $13,528 toward the full cost of a well-- $15,000. We are now only $1,472 away from completing this project.

Dear Donors of Global Giving,
We are very excited about our partnership with Global Giving. With donations through Global Giving, almost $12,000 of $15,000 to drill a new well has been raised. That is 80% toward our goal to drill one well! Thank you. Through your generosity Water for Sudan, Inc. is able to fulfill our mission of providing safe, potable water to Southern Sudanese.
Water for Sudan anticipates drilling the well dedicated to Global Giving in the late fall of 2011. This well, along with many others, will be located new Wau in the Bar El Ghazal “repatriation region.” This area is being developed for returning expatriated refugees from Kenya, Ethiopia and Northern Sudan. The Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) has asked us to drill many wells in this newly developing area. Once these areas have water, GoSS can then bring in other services such as clinics and schools.
Water for Sudan is very excited to report that our current drilling season is successful. As of early February, we have drilled 12 of our 30 wells goal. This brings our 5-year total to 88 wells. Water for Sudan can only drill during the dry season, December through May. Wells cannot be drilled from June through November, the wet season; roads are impassable and trucks are not able to travel through the mud.
This year we anxiously watched as the people of Southern Sudan went to the polls to determine their future in the referendum for independence. We were so pleased that the voting process went smoothly, and that the people of Southern Sudan will now begin their journey as a new country.
