In a country where 90% of the population cannot afford to go secondary school, the TEKUA Education Centre is changing the lives of young people in Northeastern Tanzania . It offers classes in English, Art and IT to 100 students a year, some of whom walk over 4 hours each day to attend 2 hours of schooling.
The art students sell their work as a means of income for themselves and TEKUA however with the huge decline in tourism they and TEKUA have been experiencing much financial difficulty due to poor art sales.
Project TEKUA at Imperial College London is a group of students who are selling TEKUA's artwork in the UK, in collaboration with the charity Helping Africa 100.
It costs £80 to educate a student at TEKUA; that's £80 to give students the skills they need to get a decent job, feed themselves and feed their families.
What does £80 mean to us in the UK? A night out? Or maybe less than a week's rent?
Every little really does help. 1p, £1 or £10 will translate to new skills for a young person out there in Tanzania that will last a lifetime.
If you would like to see the artwork, the "Tanzania: Art for Knowledge" Exhibition is running at Chartis UK, 58 Fenchurch St, London EC3M 4AB from 28th November - 17th December 2011 10:00 - 16:00. All paintings, sculptures, cards and jewellery on display are for sale and can also be viewed on our website www.projecttekua.co.uk.
Please RVSP to tekua.sife@gmail.com if you would like to attend or find out more.
Let's help TEKUA trade Art for Knowledge this Christmas!
Asante sana (thank you very much).
