My father, Patrick Kelsey, died at the Highland Hospice on 12 August 2011. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on 22 June 2011 and admitted to the Hospice on 20 July 2011. He decided within days of admission that he wanted to stay at the Hospice to die- it is a measure of the very remarkable care that he received at the Hospice that he, a very private and independent man, felt as he did.

Although many of the most valuable things that Dad, and we, received from the Hospice staff were intangible things- attention, time, care and sensitivity- we are acutely aware that these things also have a financial cost: for staff to be able to take the time to sit with you and listen; hold your hand, or make an omelette when that is all Dad wants, requires huge resources. We want to support the Hospice fundraising efforts to mark our appreciation for all that Dad, and we, received.

There will be eight of us doing the 5k to raise money for the Hospice- Michael, Hamish and Rowan Stewart; Alasdair and Callum Kelsey; Emma Horton and Chris Heggarty. My goal is to finish (and not to be lapped by any of the children).

Your motivation for giving is a matter for you; to benefit the Hospice, to remember Dad or just to savour my ritual humiliation. Photos to follow…. Rachael
