My story

When I had my amputations I lost the will to live but knowing my twins Michael and Diana were only 9 months old, they spurred me on and gave me a reason to fight for life.

In 1980 I was told that I had Hodgkin’s disease   - Cancer of the Lymph Glands which I managed to beat after Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy. Life was great again, but it changed completely in 1987 when I contacted Septicaemia which led to me losing four limbs, legs below knee, one arm through the elbow and the other 100mm below elbow, the amputations were carried out at Hammersmith Hospital on March Friday 13th-which is superstitious for a lot of us, but I look at it as the day I was saved.

As a quad amputee life looked daunting but I was willing to give it a chance and see what the professionals could do for me. In the back of my mind I wondered if I would ever return to the construction business or even drive, but my main concern was to get home to my family.

Well after weeks of encouragement from the Doctors and Staff and sheer determination on my part I was able to walk again and use my new upper limbs, albeit ‘Robotic’ it was a start.

Since these early days I have been very fortunate to meet my lovely wife Fiona ‘my Angel’ who has helped me adapt to life with my disability and with our two daughters Nicola and Taya life could not be better.

I am a very lucky man and now concentrate in motivating and inspiring people and giving hope to others. I am also the first person in the UK to be fitted with an i-LIMB on the NHS (which you can see in my profile picture.)!

I have tried skiing, I swim and keep very fit.  I always try to be independent as I can drive, I felt I might be able to fly a plane, well the opportunity came on March 5th for me to have a trial lesson at Cranfield flying School, Cranfield Airfield. After flying a plane I decided to try skydiving!

Fiona and I would now like to participate in a charity skydive on the behalf of Limbless Association. Any money we raise will be donated to the Limbless Association a charity which I am Acting Chief Executive.  I am fully aware of the frustrations amputees and their families suffer and feel very humble and honored to give something back.

We do hope you will be able to help and may we thank you in anticipation for your support.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: The Limbless Association gets your money faster and, if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Our Fundraising target is £5,000 but the sky is the limit, so please sponsor me now!
